P2 MINDPOWER TRAINING race day confidence IS earned in practice. so treat your key workouts much like a race: review your goals, & spend a few minutes visualizing your upcoming training session; after your warm-up, do not talk or get distracted by others - instead, get immersed in the task at hand; push your muscles & mind to higher & longer levels of discomfort, & do your best to stay relaxed while pushing yourself; after a successful key workout, affirm YOUR mental & muscle strengths, & talk to yourself in strong & confident terms; before the day ends, write your accomplishment in your training log, so that you can both cherish the day, & later look back on the day to affirm your season´s progression.

|
|
TRAIN YOUR MUSCLES and YOUR MIND: JUST like swim, bike, & run skills training, mental training skills need to be a part of every practice: at the beginning, during the most fatigue-loaded part of your session, & as you end your practice. IT IS the daily, consistent, frequent practice of setting goals, focusing, using positive self-talk, relaxing, & visualizing that allows YOU to use your mindpower automatically on race day. so practice what you desire to become ... so that on your focus race day, you CAN DO IT again.

EPIC WORKOUTS = EPIC RACES. P2´ers push themselves & their teammates at weekly team practices, & coach Matt is always present. There is a special energy & the right blend of motivation & competition when a team trains together. That is why the very best college & professional teams are at practice with their coach. An athlete needs to be pushed to faster paces & higher levels of discomfort in order to climb up the results page. When you know that you will train with your teammates & coach, you know that you have to expect more from your muscles & mind at practice. That is why P2´ers improve dramatically over time: they show-up at practice, they train with committed teammates, & their coach is there, watching them do it.

The P2 TEAM Tradition
The P2 Team has been training and racing together since 2003. Former USA Triathlon National Team coach, 2:23 marathoner, & 8:41 ironman Matt Haugen started the P2 Team so that twin cities runners and triathletes could find the expert coaching and teammates they needed for race day success. Our P2 team culture is positive, supportive, & inspiring. P2 teammates are in their 20´s through 60´s, and range in ability & experience from first time triathlete to Olympic Trials qualifier. Come to a P2 Team session & find our for yourself.
MATT CHAT YOU do it ... or ... YOU
don't on race day
10 REASONS WHY
As you reflect upon, or
anticipate your priority race finish of 2008, review the key factors that
contribute to making it a disappointing OR uplifting day:
FIRST: remember that YOU are your
own best friend, or #1 enemy on race day. because we spend the entire race
with - and within ourselves & listening to our self-talk, viewing the images
that are created in our mind, and feeling the progress that we make or dont,
toward our goals.
2ND: YOUR race day
performance expectations, as well as the expectations of your supporters, WILL
make a dramatic effect on how relaxed, calm, & flowing you are while racing.
IF you feel pressure to perform, or are unsure if you can meet race day
expectations, it might be because you (or others) have filled your mind with
unrealistic pace or place goals. Anxiety will build within as race day
approaches, leading to perceived pressure as you wonder, worry, or doubt that
you can do it on race day.
3RD: review your
training log accomplishments, and either affirm that you ARE ready to race well
& or admit that you have NOT done your homework. Your best races are the
result of focused, specific training days that add-UP after the weeks and
months of committed passion and desire. And the longer the race, the harder it
is to fake fitness physically OR mentally.
4TH: DID YOU test
yourself with race-specific key workouts and races? These simulation events are essential for you
to gain race specific fitness AND confidence. By the time you toe the starting
line of your key race, you should have pushed yourself on similar terrain, in
identical environmental elements, over a close amount of miles, and with
passion & desire that associate with race day.
5TH: REST is a key part of SUCCESS. easy days are essential
to not only avoid illness, injury, and mental burnout & but to restore the
muscle and mental fuels that you need to trounce upcoming key workouts, and to
bounce with zest on your priority race day.
6TH: dress for, pace
for, and set goals (realistic) goals for your race day weather. Weather IS
one of the 2 race day factors that most dramatically impacts your final time
and place (the other is your mind i.e. self-talk & composure in the tough
moments). With that knowledge, take the time to study the expected race day
temperature, humidity, wind speeds, and the chance of rain (or snow!). gain
efficiency by dressing, drinking, eating, and pacing for the elements. Athletes
who adjust will end-up higher on the results page.
7TH: take your race 1
mile, 1 minute, or 1 challenge at a time. Just as your weekly training
hours or miles add-up 1 workout at a time, so does your race day finish. Do not
think about the miles ahead, nor the miles that you just completed & think
about, and feel the mile that you are IN right now. get immersed in the NOW,
with all of your senses, & thoughts about how to be most efficient. And keep
your emotions in check when they are not in demand & saving them for the tough
spots when you must elevate your mental toughness in order to get to the next
mile.
8TH: taper
DRAMATICALLY to boost your race day muscle andmental powers. IT IS the athlete who is confident enough to rest a
LOT, who gains tremendous power on race day. Although tapers can make you feel
lethargic, or out of sync, they are essential if you want to pop off an extra
special late-season performance. Try it. Youll like it.
9TH: after your key
race training cycles and taper are finished, do this: give yourself permission
to perform. In the end, by affirming your training accomplishments, by
reviewing your goals, by admitting your readiness, and by accepting that you
have prepared your mind & muscles as best that you could & look forward to
finding out what race day presents to YOU:the opportunity to be challenged, the chance to display your fitness,
and the stage upon which you can use your mental and physical skills in the
same way you have dreamed and trained for most of the year. Enjoy chasing the
unknown outcome on race day.
10TH: lets face
ourselves in the mirror on this one ==> sometimes we fail to be mentally tough when the moment of the greatest
challenge engulfs us. At these times, you must have the inner strength to
make the right decision:to PRESS ONWARD,
and to persist with passion for your goals. As coach J Robinson once told me,
sometimes your personal best is NOT good enough & sometimes you HAVE to do
what is necessary in order to meet your goals.
NOW go get that finish that you
dream about.
